Yes, the fuel you put in your body reflects its quality on the outside (your skin). Diet and skin health are related. Here are some food recommendations to help your skin shine!
- Fresh fruit and produce! These foods are filled with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that your body uses to fight inflammation. Beta carotene is a natural antioxidant that can help your skin be resistant to sun damage, which is found in orange and green fruit and veggies. Some of those are: carrots, sweet potatoes, oranges, papaya, kale, broccoli, and spinach.
- Good fats like Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. These are found in olive oil, salmon, nuts, and leafy greens. They promote skin health and are filled with anti-inflammatories. Fun fact: studies have shown that people who regularly include olive oil in their diet have fewer wrinkles.
- Eat Low glycemic foods that are slow to digest and provide a slow, steady and healthy blood sugar level. Foods that spike high blood sugar have been linked to diseases, acne, and aging (including skin collagen loss). High glycemic foods are candy, cookies, desserts, sugar juices, etc. Low glycemic foods include green veggies, chickpeas, kidney beans, avocados, and lentils.
- Probiotics = a happy gut microbiome. An unhealthy gut microbiome is common in those who have diseases like eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, and autoimmune diseases. Foods that include good microbes include yogurt, kefir, kombucha, kimchi, miso, etc.
When your body is happy in the inside, it’s happy on the outside. Eat healthy, keep your gut happy and your skin will show it!
